During the early Muslim rule, coins were of a lesser weight with a relatively thick flan. When Sher Shah standardised the coinage, the weight was standardised at a higher level. Probably they wanted to avoid the coins look very large and so they made a smaller round with a thicker fabric. This is only an assumption and I am yet to find literature regarding this.
