It almost looks to me like it was being crushed. Like someone started to put it into one of those machines that turns a penny into a commemerative token. So my guess is PMD, but it's just that, a big guess.

i dont know either, nut the complete front rim is all there..with the indentation on the front and stretching on back, not sure how that could happen..either way I think it looks cool..if it is cheap pick it up, it will make a good conversation peice..

IMHO .. whatever happened to that coin occurred after it left the US Mint.

Cardman06 ... appreciate that you turned Caps-Off in your subsequent replies ... yelling in CAPS makes us all nervous.

As others have indicated, the extra letters on the reverse were applied after the coin left the mint. This cent was struck on the reverse by a token die, such as those that are used to strike the ring of a "lucky token" cent. The left side of the obverse was distorted in the process.
