Here are shots of a drawer and the cabinet itself. The drawer face I believe is original but the drawer itself was rebuilt for all of them. I'm fairly certain this is where the outgassing is as the smell of these drawers are bad. I'm sure the cabinet interior smells just as bad.

Weird thing is when the drawers are closed you don't smell anything at all. The cabinet itself has been in this room since I purchased it probably 10 years ago now. Coins have only been in it the last couple of years however.

That's great information BadThad! Thank you!

I do use a dehumidifier and the room is well ventilated which is why you don't smell it when you walk into the room. The drawer boxes were made using plywood by the previous owner. Sounds like I could rebuild the drawers using the No Added Formaldehyde plywood or low VOC option. I might try to get the cabinet out into the garage this summer for few days to see if I can kill it off and then seal the plywood as described.

Nice to know I have some options!

That's what I'd do, just open it all up and let it bake in the sun.

That's exactly what I'm going to do when we get consistently hot days this summer.

This is very unfortunate. A lot of collectors, including myself consider toned coins to be damaged as that is not how they were intended to be. But if you are happy then that's all that matters.

Most major museums have collections theoretically valued into the $millions.
The traditional cabinets that the collections are stored in does not bother the museums much.

Personally, I prefer silver coins in MS65 and above to be blast white. just as they left the coining press.

I'll throw my hat in with TheForce...on both points.
And sel_69l, too.

Maybe it's because I am strong deutan, like 10% of male humans (except for the strong bit), but I just don't get the fuzzys like a lot of people seem to for toned coins.

Different strokes. But, given a choice between two otherwise identical coins at the same price, I'll take the untoned.

I like toned coins because it is a reminder that natural physical processes will always win in the end. Nihil aeternum.
