Thanks, @-makecents-! I think my first image with the date detail (which is actually more or less full resolution) shows that the date position is definitely a "near date", and the difference in distance between the bottom of "1" and the bottom of "8" to the denticles is consistent with the VAM images for "near slanted date", but I know that there may be subtle variations that I am not aware of. I would love to post bigger full coin images, but as @jbuck said, there are limitations to how big these can be. At the same time, I am still wondering why, since the file size limitation is 10MB, and the forum software only shows a smaller version when viewed in the thread and opens up a new window when clicking on the image. I need to use different lighting in order to bring out more contrast -- I took these with natural sunlight which doesn't give as much detail. Will continue with better images once I have the lighting set up properly.

Quote: and the forum software only shows a smaller version when viewed in the thread and opens up a new window when clicking on the image. The smaller image you see is just scaled version of the large image done by your browser in code. That is, the exact same image you see as full size is just shown smaller in the thread when your browser renders it. There are not two copies of the image. This is done to prevent sideways-scrolling in the topic pages. The 10MB limit is from the software used to automatically optimize the images when you upload them*. The optimizer reduces the file size to under 500KB to reduce the amount of storage used on the server because storage is not free. This keeps Bobby's costs down and our doors open. There is no reason at all why you cannot reduce your image below 10MB before uploading it. Likes I said, crop the images to the areas of the coin used for attributions. When you save it, you should be able to reduce the file size then. The forum optimizer is going to reduce it anyway. * Now, if someone wants to pay for something they feel like is better...

I think I have the lighting issue solved. Maybe we should do this one step at a time? I'm kind of new at this, so please be patient. This is a crop of the date area at full resolution. I could get closer and get more pixels, but for just verifying the date variety, I think this is enough. Can we at least agree that this is a "near slanted date" from this picture? Otherwise, there isn't much sense in continuing down this path: Yes or no?

Looking at the last image I posted, now I can see why there might be a "gray area" where this could be a normal but "slanted" date.

I thought that I had seen doubling on the "R" in "PLURIBUS" which might have been indication of VAM-24. But now I see that although there is a small amount of doubling on the "R", there is actually much more pronounced doubling on the "I" and the "B": What does this tell us?

The closeup images are really good. Hopefully the VAM experts can offer an opinion.

Thanks to @-makecents- ... I kept hunting and came across an entry in John Robert's list "A dozen VAMs for 2020": 1888-P VAM-32 tripled obverse, all but unknown:https://vamworld.com/wiki/1888-P_VAM-32I'm now thinking this must be it ... unfortunately, there is no image of the date in that page, but merely states that it is "within normal parameters". Here are some more images: first, a detail of the "LIBERTY" letters which shows two little die gouges (?) within the recessed areas of the "T" and the "Y", as well as the same doubling on "RIB" that I already showed previously; second, full images (not resized) of the obverse and reverse. I have to get in closer with the Nikon D60 to get good close-ups, so the detail shown in the other images probably won't be clear due to the camera's lack kof resolution if I want to get the full coin all at once. 1. Doubling on "RIB" and die gouges in "LIBERTY": 2. Full obverse: 3. Full reverse: So is it VAM-32, or do I need to keep looking? I don't see the tripling in the hair, though...

Could be VAM-32. There are so many with date positioning similar to yours that are considered "normal dates". I think if you would have lighting coming from the center of the coin, pointing back towards the rim, it may show the tripling on the hair if it's there. I did a comp pic of your date and VAM-32, it looks pretty good but yours almost looks higher, see what you think. Many of the listings have doubling on the reverse. I assume you have not seen anything notable on the reverse?

Thanks @-makecents- for looking! I saw that there was an image of the full coin on the VAM site later; obviously, this does include the date. However, that image is only about 600 px square, but that shouldn't prevent the correct date attribution. However, I didn't look at it that closely, either. I see what you mean about the date on my coin being higher. Actually, I still think the date on my coin is borderline "near slanted date", but depending on the andle of lighting, one's interpretation of exactly where the date starts relative to the denticles can vary a little! There's always the possibility of a new die attribution, but I'm not counting on it. Especially since the doubling on PLURIBUS matches very closely what I am seeing on my coin. Any thoughts on the little die gouges in LIBERTY?

As to the reverse, I only saw that it did not fit any of the descriptions of the varieties which were considered "near slanted dates", so I have beed concentrating on the obverse. No doubling, and no die gouges on the reverse that I can see right now.

I cannot tell about the die gouges. They may just be damage to the coin or just die damage of some sort that is not even on any of the listings. I don't know if you have someone in the states you send things to occasionally but "messydesk" on VAMWorld does attributions cheap, I think only $10 and puts them in a labeled slab for that. Here is a link for his site if you are interested. VSS (Variety Slabbing Service). LINK http://varslab.com/ Have you posted your coin on VAMWorld's discussion forum? LINK https://vamworld.com/forum/viewforu...e6d073a721e9 Maybe someone else here sees something we don't and will chime in.
