Hello all!
Question for the Lincoln collectors. As my set is nearing completion, with just 4 coins to go:
1909-S
1909-VDB
1911-S
1914-D
I am about to take a trip to a dealer to pick up a 1911-S in MS. I know he has several VDB's and a great deal of 14-D's.
For those of you who have completed the set, or already acquired either of these two, most people rejoice as the jewel of the crown is a beautiful VDB. However, as I am sure you know, to purchase a comparable grade 1909-S VDB and a 1914-D, the 14-D is exponentially more expensive.
I don't want it to look too odd to have a severe variation in grade between the two and at the same time, I would like the VDB to be a super AU or MS60, whereas, the 14-D, at 3,000 dollars plus, is just not something I am willing to do right.
Thoughs, suggestions, ideas, feedback? MUCH appreciated!

Dear Joe,
You have quite a dilemma on your hands.
May I offer a suggestion? You might have to live with a nice 14-D in VF or above. When the time comes and your pocket book can stand the strain, trade in the VF for a match to your 09-S VDB. I doubt that there are many dealers who do not already know what you know: the 14-D is TOUGH!
Much tougher than the VDB.
In my experience, nice coins with a proven record
will be readily accepted in trade. This is especially true if the dealer has a lot of money tied up in the higher grade coin. He or she will be happy to raise cash and still have a nice coin to sell.

Matthew, thank you for your solid advice. I guess it's also a question of should I go higher on a 14-D first and wait the the VDB out or visa versa.... Buy the higher VDB, lower 14-D eventually and hope for a trade...
Such a dilemma lol.

i bought several 1914-d cents in lower grades over the years and then last year I sold all of them and got a ms 14-d and a ms 09-svdb with the returns

The 14 D and the 11 S are the harder of the four to find in the condition you are looking for. 09 S would be third. There will ALWAYS be S VDB's in MS state.
Believe the 11 S is hard to find. The 14 D is hard to find because some of the strikes are not great. Good, but not great.

Just picked up a great 11-S! So excited! High AU I'd say almost MS! Ended up going to my regular place, didn't feel like driving all the way to millers mint. I walk in, and he says "do I have something for you". He pulled out an old Dansco almost complete. Still no 09S or 14D but EVERYTHING else in that book was MS with the exception of a few AU+. I almost fainted then took the 11S and a few upgrades in the teens/20s. Pics as soon as I get home!
Seeing them so beautifully done in the Dansco I finally decided to make the switch from my 2x2 binder to a dansco (he had the new one up to 2016 or something like that with proofs)

As promised, here are photos of the 1911-S Also, the obverse of three others I upgraded. 1910- It is so luminescent in person! He glows! 1919- Has a few rim nicks on the reverse, and a slight lamination, got it for next to nothing, and mine was in horrible shape, so I bought it. 1920- Really strong strike!      |

My thought is: I can't wait for one of these to turn up in my change drawer!  In all seriousness, though, I would say "if the lower grade is available right now and this is a coin whose rarity is not going to change," get the lower grade for now. If you have a few "placeholder" coins worth a couple of hundred bucks each, selling or trading those later will take a sizable chunk out of that $3000+ you're talking about. (also by "not going to change" I'm thinking of the 1933 Double Eagle coin where there were two known to exist and then some chick found a jar in the attic that had ten of them in it.) |
