As I looked over the new 2014 WWI silver dollar, I quickly became a fan of its design and photorealistic depiction of a farewell scene at a WWI-era train station - a couple embraces in the moments before the soldier must board a train to become part of the war effort.

The design had a familiar look/style to it, however, so I had a quick look at the coin's specifications to determine its designer. There it was "Designer: Bonnie Ross."

Though she had designed coins for the RCM previously, I first took notice of Ms. Ross' work with the 2012 HMS Shannon, Brock and Tecumseh coins for the War of 1812 commemoration. I thought the portraits were particularly well done - the human face is a difficult task for many artists. Ms. Ross was also the designer of last year's Canadian Arctic Expedition silver dollar and gold $100 coins (both favorites of mine), and her work continued with the 1812 coins for de Salaberry and Secord.

I've become a fan of her work for the RCM and look forward to her future contributions.

Anyone else have a favored artist among the current crop working with the RCM?

You know, now that you mention it, I have never really paid attention or looked into who the artist is/was for coins that I like. But now that you have brought it up, I am going to start doing so.

I'm glad to hear it! Taking the time to learn such things about your coins is one of the first steps to becoming a true collector vs. just an accumulator. Have fun!

I think it is equally important for the Mint to give the proper credit to the engravers as well. IMHO, designers give the coins a foundation to work on, but it is through the engravers' execution that bring the design and concept to life. They BOTH should have proper credit.
