WE were in the lower mainland of BC buying a collection from an old dealer friend this weekend and the trip involves a ferry ride between Vancouver Island and the mainland. Coming back last evening we had an hour to kill waiting for the ferry on the mainland side. In a gift shop we spotted a display of what were called "Replica Coins for Collectors". Much to our horror we saw Counterfeit Red Cardinals, Titanic coins , RCM gold and silver bars and coins and Maple Leafs, all selling for around 15-20 dollars each. Being proactive I purchased one of the silver 2013 Maples , got a business card and receipt and my wife got a good photo of the display and the kiosk. Putting two plus two together, these are being smuggled into Canada from a company on the internet into Canada! Please beware, these look real good and the weight is close! I will be taking this further ASAP! Where is Nicklesguy and Sergeant Tony?

Wow that is appalling. Report this immediately if you haven't already. This isn't even a case for numismatic crime. You can go straight to the RCMP.

These are not smuggled in you just import in because the CBSA is not on the look out, the RCM has not intervened but I am amazed they are sold openly in the public.

@ John100 , the CBSA should be on the lookout because it is against the laws of Canada to import current legal tender coins, whether non circulating legal tender or currency. Heck they had no trouble snooping through my returning GC stuff last week.

Did you report this to the RCMP? Was this in a gift shop in the ferry terminal?

DBM.... yes indeed and they have other offices in the lower mainland as well as a .com website! I asked a BC Ferries employee what police had jurisdiction at Tsawassen Ferry Terminal and was informed "DELTA POLICE" department and not the RCMP.

The government agencies will only act on proven patents or copyright allegations, it is up to the harmed party to ask for enforcement, like previous mentioned the RCM just don't care. Hopefully when the superman fakes hit the market place maybe things will change. Still pretty bold selling fakes in a government area.

Me thinks they had better start caring! What a way to have your legitimate market ruined.

No Doubt the RCM is aware of these fakes, some pressure needs to be applied to address this very serious situation. If the mint won't act by applying pressure to our Government and RCMP,maybe if we applied pressure to the Mint (ie boycott) they would act.I for one will not risk my hard earned money on a possible fake.

Nickle rubber your point is right on about the RCM, they own the copyrights and patents , only the RCM can ask for enforcement. The whole point in battling fakes is to prevent the item from entering the market place as much as possible.

I'm starting to wonder, since this a recent phenomenon of the past 3 years in Nclt coins, how fast is it growing? I'm starting to think, in order to protect my coins, it would be prudent to buy slabbed. This way I and my heir have proof of it being genuine. I do know slabs to have been counterfeit, I don't know how prevalent this is?
I do know the coming year I intend to buy the 2 sets I'm signed up for and will continue the banknote and traditions of hunting series, along with the silver proof set. I will be switching to crh hunting for special Commemeratives. This is affordable fun and no risk. It still allows the collection to grow. I guess it will be a return to my roots, when I first got interested. It seems with all that's happened in the past 3 yrs, the hobby has gotten way more political. Both with too many changes, and a lack of beneficial changes. I have close to 500 coins I can enjoy studying and chatting about. It will also give me the opportunity to practice self discipline. Which since collecting silver coins, I've let slip away!! The money I save can got towards stabbing select coins, this is something I'm considering. I purchased my first slabbed coin a month ago.
