tepritts Valued Member United States 306 Posts	Posted 01/15/2010 10:40 am All I do is collect coins for personal satisfaction. I don't like slabs and do not include them in my collection. PS. I do own one and will probably break it out eventually. Sometimes I do buy a raw coin that I am not really sure about. So here's the question: Do any of the TPG's simply grade and authenticate coins without slabbing? I don't think it would be possible to put a picture here and have agreement. Sometimes, you just have to have the coin in hand to verify it. I bought a LWC 1938 as a proof, but I am not really sure it is a proof. No. How could you prove that it was graded/authenticated in the future without the slab? They won't risk their reputation in such a fashion. Your best bet, if such a thing is available to you, is to find a reliable local dealer who can render an educated opinion. I'm not a Lincoln guy, but I believe there are certain traits which can help differentiate a Proof from a Business Strike without the most accurate of pics. Post a note in Modern US coins to ask.
