Does any one know what to look for for this year? I was told this is a double die but cant find anything for 1998.

I don't know about doubling on these silver eagles Jeff, but that is one ugly coin. Looks like something spilled on it.

I think this is only the third coin I have ever cleaned! I got it cheep and its only 12 years old! Anyway here is the revised view!

Jeff, I certainly hope that you did not clean it because of my harsh remark about it. I didn't mean the toning was ugly, (although it actually was). What I was referring to were those white spots (that remain). 'Looks like' hard water spots, but I have heard about 'milky spots' on newer silver coins, though I thought that these were possibly the effects of some brands of slabs. I am sure that someone here will know the nomenclature of the spotting, and if there is a possible remedy.

My best guess as to the spotting is that it might be a residual aftereffect of the chlorine used in the cleaning of the planchet at the mint. (If this were true, a person could twist the notion around, go way, way out on a limb, and call it an error coin).
