j_h_s Pillar of the Community United States 1934 Posts	Posted 03/26/2008 11:12 am Im going to be looking at an 1803 cent on Friday and am nervous, see? (Who wouldnt be?). The seller doesn't know which of the 1803's it is. Any suggestions about markers/identifiers besides those listed in the Red Book I should look for regarding SD/SF, SD/LF, LD/SF, LD/LF? If it's the LD/SF, what shall I do? Would you put a capital outlay of thousands out for the coin and believe its resale value would capture that much in a venue like ebay? What percentage of overall value of the coin would be fair to offer? Report this Post to the Staff

KurtS Pillar of the Community United States 5318 Posts	Posted 03/26/2008 11:59 am There are 24 different die pairs for 1803, with rarity from R-1 to NC-1. Of course, value is a combination of rarity and grade, which I've always found tricky to determine. I would pay for R-1 prices unless the seller can prove it's a rarer die pair. Looking through a dealer's stock, I see 1803 vary widely with a huge jump in price between net F12 to net VF20. So I'd probably comb Heritage for a general range of price/grades as a start. Is that helpful? I'd loan you my Sheldon book, but I'd doubt you'd get it in time. Report this Post to the Staff
