While searching the Barber coinage last week at the shop, I came across this coin. When I start a series I take the Cherry Pickers Guide and see what , if any, anomalies exist for the particular denomination. There were not alot of varieties for these coins, mostly re-puched dates (RPD) and Re-punched Mint Marks (RPM) along with a couple Doubled Dies.

For this particular coin , I saw that there was a RPD listed for this year, with a Tripled Die Obverse along with the RPD. Since this coin is very worn (AG )I cannot see if there is any tripling. The description and picture do not seem to match well, I will include the picture from the CPG at the bottom, the picture shows everything the book shows. It described the most noticeable area being under the 8 in the date. On this coin it is straight under the 8, in the picture it is offset slightly to the right. The CPG picture stops short of showing the 2 very well, and on this coin I think it shows there best.

I have some areas labled that I thought looked like the loops from the underlying date , could be I am imagining some of these (very dirty in there) but you can plainly see the underlying loop of the 2 inside the upper loop of the struck 2 ( I think I can anyway...) I know that the CPG is not the end -all for varieties so I am hoping someone might have some insight on this. I will try to check some other books at the shop this week but I don't have alot of time to research single coins there, and my home library is lacking a bit. This may not even be a Re-Punched Date, but so far it sure looks like it to me ! All opinions appreciated .

I am just wondering if it might be different than the one in the CPG. The doubling south and east at the bottom of the 2 on yours looks more dramatic than the one in the CPG.

It may just be a not so hot picture in the book. Yours is pretty evident even on a worn specimen. Nice Pick up!

That's definitely not the same die - no chance of it. Position is completely different between the two. It could be one listed elsewhere...remember that the CPG only lists about 5% of everything known to exist. It's a 'best of' book, not all inclusive.
