What Would Cause This? - Coin Community Forum

NGiles Pillar of the Community United States 527 Posts	Posted 05/15/2008 11:45 pm Maybe the copper is wearing off. It's an 82 so there is a 50/50 chance it's copper plated zinc. Soaking in ammonia might remove the copper. I'm not a cent expert, it will be interesting to see what other people say. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 05/16/2008 9:24 pm I think it's not the copper wearing off. Looks like it had help. Could have been heated with a lighter or something with all the bumps on it. I found one the other day, but the reverse was still plated normally but the center of the obverse was missing the plating. I couldn't see any evidence of heat applied to it, but it looks like a partial plating/missing plating. I could fix up an image if anyone is interested in looking at it.
