I've posted this one before but thought I'd create a new topic to post results of my attempt at conservation of this old soldier.

The coin was never going to get alot better but my goal was simply to arrest any further damage. I'm not experienced enough to tell for sure whether I was dealing with PVC damage or verdigris. So, I tried acetone first and the Verdi-Care product second.

It doesn't look like the acetone soak of a half hour or so had any real effect which I interpreted to mean that I was probably dealing with verdigis and not PVC damage.

The Verdi-Care which I was using for the first time following the instructions on their web site did seem to help but not completely. I did try some careful prodding with a toothpick. I didn't have any thorns available :-)

Anyway, I thought I'd post the results for others to make suggestions or comment.

Thanks @E&V and @jbuck.

I noticed that the Verdi-Care leaves sort of a sheen on the coin. The manufacturer does say that what they claim is a protective layer is left. A quote from their instructions:

Quote:
Dry looking coins will come to life as the surface conditioner acts on the patina creating a
more vibrant looking coin. Corroded coins will be protected from future environmental
risks as ReAcT2™ bonds with the metal surface and neutralizing any corrosion. Coins will be
conserved and NOT cleaned!

Not knowing the chemical makeup of this ReAct2 bonding agent I wonder how this look ages with time and environment. It does seem improved for now though. Perhaps others have more experience with Verdi-Care or know how long it's been on the market.
