As a type, I believe this is pretty common. My research indicates that they circulated primarily on Prince Edward Island and in Newfoundland starting around 1830. However, what I noticed on this specimen was that the flag on the ship, although a bit worn down, still looked suspiciously like the American Stars & Stripes. It turns out there is such a variety struck by the New York firm of Wright & Bale.   Another curious aspect of this issue is that the "British" slogan it bears is actually a quote of Napoleon Bonaparte, who in an address to the defeated Austrians following the loss of Ulm in 1805 said: "Gentlemen: War has its chances. Often victorious, you must expect sometimes to be vanquished. Your master wages against me an unjust war. I say it candidly, I know not for what I am fighting, I know not what he requires of me. He has wished to remind me that I was once a soldier. I trust he will find that I have not forgotten my original avocation. I want nothing on the continent, I desire ships, colonies, and commerce. Their acquisition would be as advantageous to you as to me." Colligo ergo sum

Charlton PE 10-2.
Lees #2.
Gibbs #1.
A similar variety has the initials W & B N.Y. (in small letters) below the left-section of the water line which is
identified as PE 10-1. These are the only Ships / Colonies / Commerce having a US flag.
Grade solid F 15, perhaps VF 20.

That is a very nice one. Many you will encounter will have far less detail. It's a real keeper. Beats the pants off mine.   |

Ships Colonies & Commerce series has a ton of varieties,
US flag being one of them.
F12 - F15, a keeper for sure
