American Numismatic Society - The first gold coins of Kyrene, the tetralitra and dilitra, depict a silphium plant on the obverse and the head of Zeus Ammon on the reverse. Stylistic changes of the head of Zeus Ammon on these gold types, struck between the end of the fifth century BC and the third quarter of the fourth century BC, are comparable to those on contemporary silver coins. John Tatman (longtime ANS Member) will discuss the chronology in relation to historical events and changes in the coinage of Kyrene.
