Looking for information on Spering Good & Co, 138 Market Street, Philidelphia Store Token. I know little about this token except that the company issued this in the early 1840's and that it is quite rare. There were two verities; brass and a silver washed brass. This one is the silver washed. This was a metal detecting recovery so is has enviro damage. Any additional information would be appreciated. Thanks

to the CCF !!

Yes, Rulau listed two varieties, R5 and R6. He valued them from $70 in VG to $400 if uncirculated. Rulau noted that the company was listed in directories between 1841-1848. Thus, these would not be placed in the Hard Times era. HT tokens in generally tend to command higher prices than those in the so-called Merchant Era, 1845-60.

Cool find of a scarce issue, I'd say.

Posting pics on this site will inevitably garner more responses.

I just checked McElroy's 1849 Philadelphia City Directory. Spering, Good & Co., dry goods, are listed at 138 High Street, therein. Other Philly directories can be found at this website ....
