This dime appears AU-50 to me. - Do you think it was cleaned or is it honest circulation? - There is some glue residue (circled in yellow), which I think is likely the main reason this coin is not selling...but I'm guessing this could be removed via acetone or soaking in very hot water. - Do you feel the rim damage (circled in blue) is minimal, or could this be seen as significant in the eyes of PCGS/NGC? They've dropped the price some, but since this isn't selling, there may be an opportunity to pick it up at a further discount. Thoughts?   |

EF-45 to me, possible old obverse cleaning which is probably market acceptable, rim doesn't bother me but that discolored/odd substance issue would be an issue.

EF-45 and a bath in Acetone should remove the crud on obverse and reverse. Edge hit not much of an issue.

@ige, if the residue is removed, do you think that there will then be differential toning showing where the previously covered silver is brighter in color? I find this distracting on copper, but not sure that silver would show as much of a difference. Thx for helping me learn.

If it was cleaned it was very lightly .I'm not sure if the so called glue is really glue or another substance . Rim hit is not bothersome . what bothers me is the 3 in the date, is that Damage ,it actually looks like an overdate .  |

Thanks everyone. I thought this was AU-50, but maybe not. These were my perceived pros/cons: Pros: - nice strike (this issue is known for weak strike, especially on lower diagonal band on reverse). For example, see this recent post: http://goccf.com/t/337354- surfaces seem generally "original" (or old/light cleaning) - glue likely easy to address via hot water or acetone, and could provide leverage for discount Cons: - glue (if it doesn't come off or if discoloration is left behind after removal - rim damage (could 'details' this coin if submitted) I'll likely pass on it for now, and if it remains unsold maybe make a low ball offer. |
