Interesting Bluish-Silver Toning On 2000-2004 Nickels.

Brandmeister Pillar of the Community United States 6678 Posts	Posted 11/04/2023 1:22 pm Every once in a while, I will run across a stark bluish-silver nickel. They all seem to be 21st century coins, but before the 2006 design change. The difference in color to the average circulated nickels is immediately noticeable. I would have dismissed it as toning, but I have found multiple nickels that are the same specific tone. Also, they do not have the sharp reflectiveness of a freshly struck nickel, more of a muted gleam. I have four on my desk right now, 2x2000-P, 2003-P, 2004-P. I don't know much about nickel finishes, but I don't think that these years had any unusual Mint-applied changes. Is this just nice toning, maybe alloy tinting, or something else? nick10 Pillar of the Community United States 3207 Posts	Posted 11/04/2023 2:46 pm I always chalked it up to environmental exposure, annealing, or a slight difference in alloy. If you want to sacrifice one of them for the hobby, a lab could probably tell you if the alloy mix is not the intended 75/25. Report this Post to the Staff
