Thanks, jbuck! By the way, I've made some progress on my little map project. Importing the files with the town names into Google Maps in their My Maps feature was easy enough, though I had to use lat/long for the towns which no longer exist. I found a kml file on Google for the Arkansas border, and played with that a bit to get it looking more like I wanted. I used html a lot back in the '90's, and kml seems to be a bit similar simple coding language. Finally, displaying the end result in Google Earth looked a lot better. I loaded the info on my scrip, large NBNs and small NBNs in separate files so I can display any of them separately. I'll continue playing with it more, but here's what I have so far. First is the map for scrip and obsolete notes, next for large NBNs, and finally the small NBNs. This just show towns I have notes from; for quite a few larger towns I have multiple examples, especially for scrip.    |

Here's a note from Little Rock issued by merchant William B. Wait. He settled in the area around 1818 and was one of the first merchants in the community (Little Rock was founded in 1821 as the capital of Arkansas Territory). There are two main designs of notes issued by this merchant, with both designs issued in denominations from 10 cents to $3. The first design had wording beginning "S.H. Tucker has deposited in this office...", while the other design just says "Received on deposit...". Many of the notes, such as this one, were printed on the back of various bills of exchange or old bank notes. This note is designated Rothert 441-6.   |

Here's another interesting piece of scrip I just picked up. It's a $2.50 cent note issued in Marshall Prairie, Arkansas, with the signature of A. Clements. Little is known about this issuer, and I've found nothing on him either in newspapers.com nor in ancestry.com. In Rothert's reference on Arkansas scrip, he mentions that Anthony Clements was born in Tennessee and moved to Crittenden County near the Mississippi River in the 1860's. So far I've not found evidence that that is the same A. Clements as the signer of this note. Marshall Prairie was established before the Civil War, but was renamed to Western Grove in 1886. The current town is located about 15 miles southeast of Harrison in northwest Arkansas. This note is printed on lined paper, which is not too unusual. One curious thing, however, is the vignette to the left - it is the coat of arms of Great Britain! Why this was used as the vignette is anyone's guess... Rothert lists a 50 cents and $1 note from this issuer, but this note is unlisted.  Member of SPMC, FCCB, ANA and ANS.
