This is the first I've heard of this variety! Where and how would a newbie collector learn of such varieties?

Don't feel bad. Most coin collectors or dealers for the matter don't know, care or understand varieties or even errors.

Pick yourself up a Whitman's Cherrypicker's Guide. That will keep you busy for awhile.

@snailking1 - Have you thought about getting it graded? Did you ever give it an acetone bath?

Thought about it is as far as I've gotten.
I still might (some day), but only because there seem to be very few.

I did: no affect Perhaps if I let it sit for several days it might help a tiny bit.

No, if it doesn't help with a few minutes in acetone, several days will not help it.
