Is Machine Doubling even a thing on edge lettering?  This kind of thing isn't in my wheelhouse, so I'll let the others chime in. If any member can answer my question, that would be great. I want to learn more about it. Errers and Varietys.

I would be interested in knowing how the edge lettering is applied. Are they struck or is it made into the collar, and at what point are they put there if struck, before or after the coin itself is struck? To add to the site that -makecents- supplied, the lettering is applied on a seperate machine by a disc with raised lettering known as a roller die. This is prone to slippage which can give the appearance of Machine Doubling. This is run at high speed so many minor anomolies can occur which add no value to the coin. The ones with the most value are coins where the lettering is missing. |

Thanks, JimmyD, that makes sense, I could not imagine it being actually "struck" into the edge as we think of obverse and reverse dies being struck. So this would make Machine Doubling as we know it impossible. I suppose it could still be considered a type of Machine Doubling as it was made by a machine.  -makecents-

Thanks, snailking1. So in the first link you provided, it actually states that the proof coins edge lettering is applied in one of the ways I thought it might be, by the collar, done at the same time the obverse and reverse is struck. That's interesting that proofs and business strikes are done differently but not surprising.

Because business strikes are run at a high speed, the lettering could not be applied with the collar at the same time. Proofs are run at a lower speed enabling the lettering to be on the collar die and applied at the same time. This also why the lettering always faces up to the Obverse. |
