I have a couple of 1861-O half dollars and want to see if anyone can identify which of the 15 varieties they could be. I apologize for the bad pictures as my camera years ago used to take great pictures but since I changed to overhead lighting in the room I can't take a good picture to save my life. Coin #6 I think I know which one but it seems that the reverse is used on 2 different issues. I think the drapery is the deciding factor on this one.

Start with the MM - the O is very close to the stem.

This is a W-9 die marriage.

We all like challenges. Are there any links anyone can provide to compare the possibilities?

Quote: ps. I tried the link but got an error message. I also got an error message when trying to click the link but it is the same place that I look. I don't know if the forum is blocking the link but I will try and include a direct link in this post for you. I don't know if there is a way to make a hyperlink. https://lsccweb.org/Portals/2/Docum...1si7qX4kqg==

Quote: This is a W-9 die marriage. Can you give me a pointer as to why this is a W-9 and not a W-2? They both use reverse B. The only differentiating identifier that I can see is the angle of the date on the obverse. W-8 also uses reverse B but no elbow drapery on the obverse so that rules out that one on my coin. Thanks.

Quote: Can you give me a pointer as to why this is a W-9 and not a W-2? There are a couple of things that I would say, 1. The W-2 marriage does not have a clash in the reverse shield and your coin does. 2. The date placement looks the same on both W-2 and W-9 but they are just a tiny bit off and yours matches closer to the W-9 (you need to zoom in and draw lines or do an overlay of the images to see). 3. The die crack on your coins' reverse thru "TES OF" is a much later die state than the W-2, which is very weak in MDS-LDS. There are more but your coin does look like an EDS W-9.
