As many are aware, ebay requires that slabbed Pokemon cards sold for $250 or greater be authenticated through a service arranged by ebay. Not sure what the dollar threshold is currently, but it's not uncommon to come across PSA graded Pokemon cards with an ebay authentication 'certificate'. We should revisit the ebay PCGS coin authentication practice early next year--see which predictions held, and which flopped... |

Yeah I saw on a Facebook page ebay reps went to the ANA World's Fair of Money, visited with a group of dealers/coin experts for several hours about fakes, how to reduce fakes being sold, a back and forth discussion. In my opinion ebay used to be better getting rid of fakes, at least we know they are showing some concern But a $500 threshold to get coins authenticated does nothing for all the lower priced fakes, silver eagles, Morgan, Peace etc. Edited by livingwater

There are currently 24,000+ gold bullion coins being sold on ebay with a price tag of over $500 each. How on earth is this grading exercise going to work? I agree with HondoB that sellers should be verified. And funds held in escrow until the authenticity of the coin has been determined. Much easier to do than sending tens of thousands of coins to PCGS back and forth. |

I wonder how long it will be before ebay's authenticated coins (1) reappear on ebay as "pre-authenticated" coins, (2) spawn fake authentication stickers, and (3) have fake authentication stickered coins appear on ebay? |

I'm curious why ebay shareholders would have an opinion on such a small business area for the overall platform. |

 Why should they care? I believe most shareholders of anything, not just ebay, are only concerned about value and dividends. They elect the board to maximize those things. |

Most shareholders of any big company are almost certainly not even aware that they own shares of that company. Passively held mutual funds and ETFs are the biggest shareholder in 88% of S&P500 companies; passively held mutual funds and ETFs hold, on average, about 25% of each S&P500 company. The much smaller number of very large shareholders in huge firms probably has an opinion on major issues. But I rather doubt the details of uncertified coin sales are even the tiniest blip on their radar. |

I'm just curious... The authentication model is spreading across the collectables landscape. Since the collectables market is rather large and continues to grow (and ebay is a BIG player), I'd think more than a few ebay shareholders are watching this. So, same question--anyone here an ebay shareholder and willing to share your thoughts? |
