Aelius Sestertius, Pannonia

Another of the big bronzes of the antonies gathered into my set. Well on the way to compete that one.



I was initially worried about the uncleaned incrustations in the edges but I am now confortable with the coin being genuine. Found it in a past auction in Lucernae whose owner has a good reputation. Still surprised it did not sell then but that made my luck now. Like other Aelius sestertius I saw the surfaces are a little concave and that protected the design from greater wear. T[R] POT COS II can barely be read but PANNONIA is nice and clear.

Pannonia the province is personified in the reverse figure, holding a military standard. The obverse shows the bust of this co-emperor of Hadrian who narrowly missed making it to sole Augustus.
