It may have had a slight amount of heat applied to it from a domestic stove, to create an artificial toning. I have fooled around in just this way; it is very easy to do.

Try it with a top condition current issue coin, and have some fun!

I heated an Australian Platypus 20 cent coin in MS63 this way to red heat, and plunged it into cold water. It turned to a very attractive jet black colour. I then put it back into circulation to arouse the curiousity of those who may have been interested.
