1957 Cent. Doubled Die Obverse / DDO ?

joshkellogg Valued Member United States 150 Posts	Posted 10/23/2011 8:48 pm I came across this penny at my job, at a small market. It's in pretty good shape for a circulated coin from the 50's. I'm relatively new to collecting and I was wondering if anyone could help me figure this out. It looks like there is some doubling in the "957" of the date, and "In God We Trust." Is this Machine Doubling, a die error, or something else? I'm not concerned with value, I just like coming across interesting stuff. There does appear to be a die clash however, with part of the N in CENT from the reverse being visible between Lincolns' chin and bowtie... matthewpj73 Valued Member United States 187 Posts	Posted 10/24/2011 2:32 pm In order to understand die clashes, you have to have a basic understanding of how coins are minted. Once you have a basic understanding, the easiest way to describe a die clash is that it is caused when there is no planchet between the dies and they strike, causing the dies to come in contact with each other, sometimes leaving an imprint in the die itself. So you get features from the reverse "mirrored" on the obverse and vice-versa. Looking at the excellent example you have provided, I think that I can also see the bottom of the E, protruding from the bow tie area on Lincoln.
