SA4H - it went back ordered when it was listed. I think it has to do with the inventory they are currently doing. I read elsewhere that someone called in and ordered and was told to ignore the 09/03 date because it would probably be a couple of weeks before these ship.

I bet they sold a good number of these pucks yesterday.
1) Good design
2) Low price tag
3) Silver on the way back up, people want to buy before the price change
4) Free shipping

I know that it has become common practice, but I still do not like the mint putting items up for sale that they don't have in inventory (other than the ones like the special sets that are mint to demand with a limited ordering window). In the case of the ATB-Ps, I don't see any reason that they cannot have 5 or 10 thousand coins ready to ship on the release date. I think that if they are not ready to ship that they should postpone the on-sale date until inventory exists. Especially now that they have the ATB-Ps on subscription, they know what an absolute minimum mintage will be and can be ready way ahead of time. This practice is relatively new, at least to the extent that is happening currently.

As long as I am ranting, what is up with the 2013 ASE sets? They keep changing the expected ship dates to new dates in the past! If you are going through the trouble of giving me a new date, at least make it in the future. It makes the mint & PBGS both look like f...ing idiots. I realize that production of these coins might be delayed because of what looks to be a record year of bullion ASE production (they are over 4 million coins ahead of this time in 2011, the previous record year). It looks like they will easily top 40 million bullion ASEs shipped this year. Given all that, I just don't see any way that they can ship my coins four weeks ago.

@ Clair - I agree with everything you have mentioned above. I have the same concerns with both issues. What the heck is going on at the Mint? Is there any way to contact the U.S. Mint to express our concerns? Email address or via phone? Or would all of this just fall on deaf ears if we do contact them? This is just frustrating their customers, can't they see this?

The first issue might not be with the Mint itself but with its fulfillment contractor, PBGS. I don't mind ordering a new product, and waiting a few weeks for shipment especially if the the price goes up in the interim. Somebody has to order the packaging and approve and print the LOAs and sometimes that's the hold up. With the changing dates on the existing unfulfilled orders wonder if that might have something to do with the "waiting room" shopping cart upgrade this weekend?

I also agree, yesterday when I ordered the FM puck I couldnt believe it was backordered!! I'm actually thinkimg about canceling the order, it was an impulse buy knowing they will be going up in price very soon. But Frankly I really don't have the extra $ right now, had they had them in stock the deal would have been done. But I was looking on ebay and it seems like you can get this years P pucks graded in SP69 for not that much more. It just seems stupid that within the first hour of a new product release, said product is already on a backorder....

I don't really care that it was on backorder. Only a few days. Inventory is going on so maybe that has to o with it as well. I'm just glad I was able to get it for 154 95 still. They don't charge the cc until it ships so not a big deal to me

tkflex... not sure on the price going up, since silver is sliding back down again. I think many of us envisioned a price increase if it hit $25 an ounce. I think the FM release as well as the Rushmore are still the 2 ATB's you might want from this years set.

Clair - I agree - although given that silver was rising in price until yesterday - I and a lot of others were kind of anxiously awaiting the release. I'd rather have mine ordered and on backorder at $154.95 than not ordered and the price rise to $179.95. Net result is I know I am in for the coin, and at a good price - I can wait a couple of weeks.

Now why don't they have any made? I can't answer that - especially given that they aren't close to selling out the others and the bullion isn't selling at record rates for these either... it does appear to be poor planning - and given the record for the ASE set this year - I am going to say over all the mint isn't setting the bar very high for themselves.

I agree I'm in for one at 154.95.

Yeah the backorder sign has disappeared. The coins should be shipped sooner than expected. Now I'm really happy that I ordered early.

When I'm a little short on money I'm not so thrilled about getting my coins but I've decided to get the series and made a plan and I'm sticking to it so that's that. After getting my coins that feeling usually goes away after inspecting the coins anyway.

The other motivator is when silver goes back to $35-40 an ounce, these coins should go back to well over $200 easily for an asking price. I've also been looking at ebay and various online retailers and they're fetching a nice premium and/or have sold out or have low stock signs for the Uncirculated Ps.

Limited mintage, coins are in demand, silver has many uses, high quality coins and price of silver should increase to at least $30 an ounce within a year, I'm keeping any of the 5 oz pucks if they get to my house, not playing the third party grading game. They're all keepers unless something obvious like a crack or something. This is a sound investment.

That's how I feel as well. When we ordered the lady at the mint said what they always do. A week to 2 weeks for delivery. She said that the backorder status wouldn't affect that. Who knows. When they come they come. At least held at the price

My status has gone to in stock & reserved as well, and they have charged my CC which isn't supposed to happen until they actually ship but PBGS has been hitting CCs days ahead of shipping since they started doing fulfillment. This is one thing I wish the mint would crack down on them for. The mint promises, like is the practice of many other on line retailers, to only charge when shipment actually takes place. Everything the mint sells on its website is a retail item, priced far from the daily fluctuations of the PM markets so there is no need for them to pre-charge us.

@Clair: I have everything sent to a post office box and PBGS always hits my CC up a day or two before actual shipment because their policy is to use USPS priority mail or FedEx smart post for delivery to a USPS facility, which adds 24-48 hours extra handling time. I'm ok with the money charged out in advance as that's the way I transact mail orders. It's just not a good idea to have a lot of small packages sent to one's home/workplace, there are always nosy neighbors, postal carriers, colleagues, etc. that may someday target your residence and divest you of your investment.
