wwwww Pillar of the Community Australia 541 Posts	Posted 04/07/2012 11:37 pm You're absolutely right, it is a nice coin, but you should be careful, a brilliant mirror finish like that isn't consistent with an original 1959 business strike penny, they have a brilliant cartwheel finish. In fact, 99% of business strike pre-decimal coins are struck with a brilliant cartwheel finish, so if a pre-decimal (or early decimal) coin doesn't display cartwheel lustre, you should immediately question whether its been cleaned. In this case however, you can tell its a proof strike by the surface curvature around the bust, that is a characteristic exclusive to the proof strike. Report this Post to the Staff
wwwww Pillar of the Community Australia 541 Posts	Posted 04/07/2012 11:53 pm I've highlighted in this pic what I mean about the surface curvature, note the lines going towards the bust, this is caused by the intense strike pressure required to produce the proof strikes. It's not a characteristic of every proof, but it is a characteristic of the 1959 copper proofs (and to some degree the silver proofs). Report this Post to the Staff
