This is a POP THREE at PCGS - I thought I'd never get this coin that I was underbidder on in 2008. The owner and I have been buying and selling to each other now for about a year. Another friend alerted me to this coin being on ebay. I contacted the seller - and we struck a deal on a direct payment. Thrilled beyond belief: Sellers Images: Heritage's images:

The big news in Barber Land recently is that Don Willis of PCGS has consigned all of his Barbers to JJ Teaparty. A good friend called me to tip me off. I had to wait a week while they straightened out all the paperwork - sending coins in for possible "+" plus upgrades. And then send the coins off to CAC . I was fortunate enough to get four AU 58 upgrades for my Quarter set: 1894-S, 1907-D, 1908-D ( RPD ), and 1908-S. No images, yet. I also added an 1898-S Half in PCGS 58...which is stunning !! I'll try and upload the image:

That's a really sweet half, Mike. The 98, 99, and 00 coins from San Fran are some of my favorites. I haven't bought much notable lately to share, but I did strike a deal for a coin that is the most expensive coin I have bought. It came at a funny time when I wasn't ready with the funds. Luckily the dealer who had it is an awesome dealer. I have bought, sold and consigned with him for the last 4 years. I asked him if he would take a couple of payments over time to acquire this coin and he was more than happy to oblige. We talked about final payment yesterday, and I can finally say this is my coin although it will be a handful of days before it gets here.

Justin, Very wholesome 97-S. It's got a great look. Can't blame you one iota for buying it over time. I used to do ( and in some cases, still do ) the same thing, if I wanted a really choice coin and had other obligations standing in the way. You won't regret buying that coin, ever. The dates you mentioned, 1898, 1899 and 1900 San Fransisco Halves ( commonly referred to as ) Philippine Hoard coins have been the subject of many an article. I have seen a few of these dates filter back into the States and they are ( for the most part ) cleaned and abused. I hate to make excuses, but my lap top can not access the Internet and I can't easily post any images. My latest newp is out of the Gardner sale this week, a nicely toned 1895 Proof Dime - PCGS 63 CAC - which should be here in a few days. Let see if I can post the images.... ......well, guess not.... Images too large.... Darn.... ..... Only the tiny obverse image took.....

Granted, this one's not as pretty as most, but it's my favorite counterstamped Barber coin; and, a key date, to boot ... August E. Linzel, 1831-1904, was a master gunsmith. Located in St. Louis, prior to the Civil War, he later moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. He and his son pursued the gunsmith and locksmith trades. This counterstamp matches that seen on the barrel of a percussion rifle.
