I spoke to a mint Rep today and he told me most of them should be shipped between now and mid February.

Devack: I think they ship one type at a time, after they've done with 1912 $5, they move on to 1912 $10...

Regarding the 215,000 being smelted, it would be logical to assume a larger portion of the earlier coins (1912) would be in circulation longer, therefore subject to more handling and wear. Further, I think I read somewhere, that most of the 1914 mintage was never circulated but was withheld pending the change in policy? If the RCM is looking for volunteers to help count, I in! |

The Mint certainly did not have many high grade 1912 coins to choose from as they did not offer any premium 1912 $10 coins. The only premium 1912 $10 coins were found in the 6 coin premium set. Plus the 1912 $5 hand picked coins were the first to sell out. And there were only 1336 $10 1912 coins available. Compare that to the 10,964 available for the 1914 $10 coin. Edited by MoneyPenney

I received my $5 1912 on Monday. I apologize in advance, because I don't know how to shoot pictures with a camera and to post them online. So here instead is my narrative take on the coin. I'm a novice grader and collector, but here goes:
The obverse side is an MS-60 or MS-61 at best(The front and rear fields are covered with dings and light scratches). Interestingly enough, though, the reverse with the Seal of Canada looks absolutely immaculate: I mean you can barely see any dings or marks even under 10X magnification (it is more like a MS-67).
Both sides have great lustre. The Canadian Seal is intricate and eye-appealing. The portrait with the crowned king is likewise attractive. Even with the bagmarks, it is a beautiful coin to behold:)
I'm a little confused about the purpose of the silver-colored hologram stickers on either side of the capsule. Both were apparently poorly placed and do not even cover the crack between the two pieces of the capsule: I could open the capsule without disturbing either hologram stickers.
Anyway, for a MS-60 (uncirculated) coin, I feel like $500.00 was a very reasonable price for a beautiful coin with such a rich history. Heck, even if it is only an AU, I wouldn't feel any different. I paid only roughly a 25% premium over the current spot price of gold for this coin, and that is much less of a markup than I paid for some generic U.S. and world commemorative gold coins that I own.
I knew the $5 1912 coins have a much bigger mintage than the following two years when I ordered. But I really wanted a first year of issue coin. And that's exactly what I got (nothing more and nothing less). Thanks for letting me share my experience:)

sturmgrenadier, your post is an excellent precis of why I collect coins, and what I tell others when they are deciding what to collect. I buy and collect coins, business strikes or NCLT, because I like them. They are beautiful and tell a story through their history. Glad you liked the gold coin...
