Hawk, I gotta admit there is something to that whole Karma thing.
But if you don't think little events can't change big ones, just look up the Battle of Waterloo. The Battle was in a deadlock when Napoleon noticed a weakness in Wellingtons lines. He ordered a dispatch rider to carry Orders to one of his Generals. Orders that would probably have won the battle for Napoleon and changed history.
Unfortunately when the horse had been reshood the Ferrier was short ONE nail. On the way to deliver his orders; the horse threw the shoe that was one nail too short. The horse broke it's leg and the Rider never delivered the orders, and Napoleon lost the battle. Because of a Nail.
Or that one brave soul that faced down the Chinese Tanks in the Video clip of the Chinese "revolt".
The writings of Patrick Henry are widely regarded as the catalyst that brought the English Colony of Virginia to support New England when they flaunted The Goverments authority and started the American Revolution. It is widely recognized that without Virginia there would have been no victory in the American Revolution.
One man, and the power of his pen.
Miggs; believe it or not I actually agree with some of what you say. But I have a degree in Math. Give me enough latitude and I can make a graph look like Bozo the Clown. I have a couple of problems with your graph. One it is not indexed in actual dollars. Second; it stops just at the point that the bubble burst, and does not show the legs down in the two years since. And third it is really not a 13 year run, at best it is an 11 year run. Co-incident of the 2002 Act that let Banks Gamble on the Commodities market. Notice that since 2002 Commodities such as beef, milk, Oil, Energy and PM's have risen; AND been removed from the Inflation index.
Which reminds me, has anyone seen that the Gov. uses a new inflation index? They are not even trying to be fair anymore. It uses items that are bought with discretionary funds as the index. Food, Energy, Housing, Transportation; are all taken out of the equation. Instead we are looking at the rise in prices of such things as...toasters and TV's.

Wow JK very interesting history on Waterloo there never new that, fine example of the small pawns that are the difference in victory or defeat....
I will say too however the Duke was a sharp command, his box formations laying in wait on their belly's in behind the hills was most brilliant and Napoleon just like Hitler was a victim of their own earlier success as to say they over looked the enemy and what they were capable of....
Also, when he Napoleon sent in his undefeated crack regiment "The Imperial Guard" which had never lost a confrontation suddenly was in full retreat after entering that cross fire zone of death, I think it did morale damage to the French troops that could not be fixed....
ALSO the pesky Prussians just showed up on the field and his ONLY chance was to beat the Duke and company and then turn his army on the Prussians, and that was TOO much to ask of any army IMO....

Quote: Gold and silver are up 13 straight years Like JM mentioned it really isn't. Its clearly been going down since 2011. Some of that run up also had nothing to do with a crisis. There was a LOT of money being made in that 2000s and people had extra to spend. Silver is probably revalued closer to 10 dollars than 3 dollars from industrial use which is where it was going until the big run and the take off. As for the cyrus thing and banks doing the same in the US I would never say something couldnt happen, it could. On the list of things to worry about though that probably stands somewhere around an alien invasion or yellow stone going off. Theres just no reason for the US to do it. They can print their way out of a crisis a time or two with little to no impact. Not to mention politicians first and foremost are survivalists. Taking peoples money is one of the fastest ways to assure theyre out of a job or states start leaving the union. Texas would probably just say alright weve had enough were out. A lot more needs to happen to get close to the point of that happening. Remember there are no fundamental rules of economics. Debt and everything else only matters if people say it does. The world isn't going to send itself into the middle ages calling in debts. Its all relative.

Quote: Remember there are no fundamental rules of economics. Debt and everything else only matters if people say it does Thought provoking, I would have to disagree with this statement because it is incomplete. Yes, if we all agree something doesn't matter, then it doesn't matter. BUT, we can't all agree forever. There will come a time when some powerful influences will disagree, and that's when the SHTF.

Just to name two: "Money Supply" has gone through about 14 different revisions. "Unemployment" levels have been drastically redefined. It makes me wonder what the numbers would look like if we applied 1975 reporting rules to our economy.

I do think there will be a day where the US will play second fiddle or even not exist just like with Rome, however that wont happen in our life time. For US debt to matter barring just insanely stupid actions several things will have to happen. The world will have to isolate itself from our economy, their economies will have to be recovered and the US one being the outlier instead of just the norm, and our military might will have to be less than impressive. As of now any action to make our debt matter affects everyone. Were the worlds largest consumer by far, destroying us would destroy their own economies as well. We havent seen the massive move to isolate themselves as of now. Chinas success for example is largely do to their cheap labor to sell us stuff, they dont want to see us go and cripple them with no one to take our place. Military power also matters because as of now UN operations basically mean US forces under a foreign commander. Without the US they lose their army. Loaning us money is basically the price they pay not to have to devastate their limited forces in combat or have massive standing armies of their own. Again though at this point even if the debt was called in all wed have to do is produce it and say here it is. Loaning money though aside from Nuclear weapons is one of the greatest deterrents of conflict. Our economic ties are what keep us from ever having open war with China, its always just posturing from a mutually beneficial relationship despite ideological difference. Those loans buy foreign countries favor and in some ways make sure we wont have to worry about each other. The world may love to hate on us, but the developed world needs us and money generally trumps all. Whats true today wont be true forever, but thats not a situation that will change in the blink of an eye, it will be decades of slow changes if not longer.

..... and that's exactly right, debt doesn't matter. The US will always package and re-package the debt and someone will keep buying it. China is committed to buying US debt, they will never escape from that because the minute they do, they are in trouble.
Japan has never stopped buying US debt. It goes on and on. The US has a "problem" other countries wish they had,, having someone to buy the debt.

Here's another thought to toss into this ring... when the SHTF, and all the rules are out the window, just where is the actual physical gold that all these countries think they own? I may be wrong, but I believe most of the world's gold is physically stored in New York, Kentucky, and London. Possession being 9/10's of the law, well...

How about we get 15 people to pool $100/ea, and the winner gets an ounce of gold from the funds in escrow?

"And building back doors in our systems to steal technology. Their debt buying come to think of it more like an investment in their research. Its be funny if it wasn't so true"
I live close to a little place called Oak Ridge, and we all know what they made and make there....
In my bar tending over the years I have met some unique people including a smart mathematician who works in one of the top secret labs....
Anyhow they were most recently hacked by China about a year back, via a simple email sent through the system to all workers in the disquise of a Human resources email....
Anyhow total Chinese tech stealing hack tech no doubt....
But is this anything new we all steal each others secrets and have been for eons. Just so happens the USA and UK are the best of the best at it. Think of the U571 story and all the code breakers devices we intercepted off of many German you boats....
Or A fellow from UK named Jasper who was a Houdini magician of sorts, master of smoke and mirrors literally....
Tricked the German JU87D dive bombers one night into attacking a fake Suez canal, by blacking out the real canal and lighting up a wooded area close by as well as other huge feats in the African campaign....
In fact Patton was nothing but a great big DECOY toward the D day invasion after he smacked that soldier and got himself into some trouble with his commanders McArthur perhaps. He was positioned in Calais with all of his balloon tanks and planes, via a FAKE army for the German spy planes to see and report on.....
You see Calias was SHORTEST distance between England and France in the English channel, so Hitler was CONVINCED this is where the attack would come....
He had some serious Panzer divisions in Calais that in theory if deployed in right areas of the real Omaha assaults and others, that they may have been able to blow us back into the sea. I doubt that but no doubt we would have taken way more casualties then we already did.....
But Hilter did not order the movement of any of these tank divisions until like a month after the main invasion as he was still believing all the FALSE info provided to him mainly by British double agents lol....
By the time he did as they say,day late and one dollar short....
