The whole 1->207 post has inspired me to try and collect the emperors. I realise ill never get them all, but I want to take a crack at getting one for every decade of rome. Ive got 43 rulers now (including wives, that is). A list of the emperors I have (and havent got) is on my wantlist. Heres my needs to fill in those gaps: Augustus Tiberius Caligula Claudius Domitian Trajan Lucius Verus Commodus Caracalla Geta Alexander Severus Maximinus Thrax Gordian III Phillip the Arab Diocletian Maximian And of course, I cant afford those really late roman guys. What do you guys think, do-able? Will I have to go and buy some of these, specially? |

Good luck, it can be a daunting task. I've been collecting ancients for a little more the eleven years now and I'm not half way yet. There will be some emperor that I will never be able to afford but as long acquire most I'll be happy.

When I began collecting 35 years ago I had similar 'high' hopes. The best way to proceed I believe is to place some guidelines on the collection. The Julio-Claudians always have been and probably always will be popular. But by limiting myself to bronze issues and always looking for the best deals I found I could fill in most of the first 250 years. When I started a 'nice' Claudius As would cost close to $100 ..... Today it is less thanks to the Internet and new finds. But some Emperors will always be tough and pricey. Try to concentrate on one century at a time !

Rufus, I would try that but as I only have uncleaned coins its pretty difficult. The current aim is to pad 200-300AD. Got my biggest gap between 222 and 251. I need to get a Phillip and a gordian Ideally but I know I dont have one floating about in my current stock and its really difficult to trade for romans!

I currently have some lower grade Coins listed on ebay. 1 Tiberius from Hispania and 2 Claudius asses. Current bid I believe is 1.99 . Knock yourself out my friend ! |

I am attempting a similar Imperial collection. Augustus through Marcian (including JC for good measure). Minus the Gallic (and a few other) usurpers and Caesars. Imperial issues only and AVG issues when possible. The only one I can pretty much say for sure I will never have is Constantius III. Gordian I and II are going to be a challenge also.
Ive got most of them. The ones I am missing now are:
Julius Caesar, Galba, Otho, Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Gordian I, Gordian II, Balbinus, Pupienus, Hostilian, Aemilian, Saloninus, Constantius III (HAHAHAHA yeah right), Johannes, Valentinian III, Marcian.

I assume the coins will sell for modest prices. I am sure we can work something out even if it need be trade. Go for it !

A good 95% of my collection comes from uncleaned lots, even some of the harder to find emperors were from them. If you are looking for coins of Gordian I and II. You will have to shell out lots of money, Gordian III are very common and I have found many in uncleaned lots, mostly provinical though.

Marti - I have a marcian - its a filler, but I have it...Clear monogram. I didnt think they were that rare! Id offer it to you but the odds of me finding another are slim (this one was uncleaned for £1 along with loads of other great stuff like my Leo). Plus, its my longest unbroken chain - Valentinian I, 364 to Leo I, 474. 110 years. If I had jovian it would be Constantine I, 307 to Leo I, 474. But alas, I'm yet to find one of him. Hes the only one I need to complete the whole run of late roman emperors.
And thanks for the good luck, ill probably need it.
EDIT: Rvf - do you mean bid on them then trade the equivalent value they end at?

Ben, if you every run across another with a good monogram I would certainly be interested. They aren't too terribly rare, usually going for 20-100. I have just been lurking and waiting for one with acceptable details. :)

Sorry couldn't resist  The the reverse looks really nice with the clear monogram but the obverse isn't so hot. I'm currently looking for an upgrade.  Edited by VisigothKing
