For the great lakes I like the idea but I personally don't have any connection to them. Yeah a free wood box is nice but really its just a wood box...can but all different types online for cheap....Im having a hard time dropping $600 on this....and you never know maybe the mint will change the box date or add more boxes or whatever....its just a pain in the bum these days dealing with that stuff with the mint...

I think Great Lakes set appeals to anyone that lives or has had experiences at one or more of the lakes. Wood case is nice to get but I wouldn't exactly think people are buying just to get the case. Opening this up to non-residents of Canada really increased sales. Maybe this is new strategy with RCM-open up new coins to Canada only & then a few days later, open the flood gates? Superman coins started sales for Canada residents only & a few days later included the US. Trying to keep Canada MC members happy anyways?

I like the great lakes set and have been them all - I live in the US - and close to one. But I'm not too excited about the price tag - It might be a set that would appeal to folks in the US though..
Must be some people that like as it's awaiting stock :)

@ coinhooked --> "Wood case is nice to get but I wouldn't exactly think people are buying just to get the case."

I saw the first coin online and I was like, it looks nice but no thanks. I don't want to have five coins in five boxes. I then saw the subscription set and a nice wood box and I was like, ohhhhhhhh, that's much better. OK, SOLD.

So at least in my case, I was "suckered" into buying the set because of the wood case.

I'm torn between subscribing or waiting to buy the full set at a later date when I can see what the coins look like.
The risk of waiting is that the set may have upward potential (and limited to 1,500 subscriptions)...

I would not worry to much about waiting to see the full set. I'm sure they will be out there at a reasonable price...

@jpaiva83, you do make a good point-if this set would have been issued with a cardboard case, it would have been a big turn-off.

Not sure I understand the idea that people who don't live near the GLs won't be interested in these coins. They are innovative and could be very nice.

I mean, I have many coins in my collection that have subject matters to which I have no personal connection. I've never seen a wild grizzly, polar bear, antelope, big horn sheep, dinosaur, glowing dinosaur, never hear of a coneflower before this year, could not care less about Swarovski figurines, not a bird watcher or ornithologist, don't collect fine art paintings, or hunt ducks, etc. etc.

Yet I have coins featuring all of those things and more.

If the GL sub is truly 1500 then it will sell out because of the coins - not the theme. The only issue I can see, is that the 8500 coins as singles might be a tough sell and therefore opens the door for the mint to recycle them into some other presentation in 2015. Speaking of, I really don't like the mint dragging this series out for 18 months or more.

I'll just add an agreement. Cardboard boxes will never make it to my collect. They simply will not survive the test of time as cardboard will deteriorate no matter how you store it.

+1.

The fact of the limit to 1500 is the clue here. But it's impossible to know what's going to happen until 2015. I don't know how RCM could recycle the 8,500 coins left if there's already a set with the coins in a wooden and outer designed box. In the case of Alegorys coins there wasn't a set neither with the WAR 1812.

Has it been confirmed by the mint that there are only 1,500 subscriptions?

Now my question would be, is RCM reserving some for general release or will they become available again such as the caibou was awaiting stock & then back available for awhile?
