Quote: South Arabia (Yemen) - 1964 50 fils: Nice! I know there's no relation, but seeing the ship's broad, single sail on this coin made me think of viking ships.

Quote: 1986 China 5 yuan featuring the clipper ship Empress of China. @zurie: Nice coin! It brings back memories of walking the Great Wall while on one of my trips to China a few years back. @spruett001: I've liked that Bahamas coin from the first time I saw it. Nice design (IMO) and subject matter worthy of commemoration! The Franklin Mint produced some very fine coins and medals in the 1970s! Thanks both for posting!

Here'a medal from 1992 that commemorates the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' voyages to the New World. Columbus' Santa Maria is seen on the obverse in the background. AT&T licensed the "500" logo seen on the reverse from the Christopher Columbus Quincentenary Jubilee Commission, a Commission created by the US Congress to, among other things, coordinate the US' 1992 commemoration of Columbus' voyage in 1492. The obverse design seen on the medal was also "borrowed" from the Commission, as it was used on a number of the Commission's official commemorative medals.
