1822 Dime? Quite Possible The Buyer Will Not Be Happy

GERMANICVS Pillar of the Community Germany 1856 Posts	Posted 06/14/2014 03:10 am These two capped bust dimes dimes sold recently, one an obvious 1833, the other described as an 1822. I came upon this listing yesterday and was surprised by the final sale price. Unfortunately, I think the buyer will not be happy with his purchase - the 1822 (and I think that is what attracted the buyers) is clearly not an 1822, but a later date, closed-collar dime dated 1832 in my opinion. The 3rd digit in the date is worn just enough to make it look like a 2. Could be an honest mistake by the seller, that is possible. However, a comparison with a genuine example quickly reveals the difference. The 1822 dime is a very scarce date (1 die variety only for the year, R-4, approximately 200 known), any example is valuable. Buyers should be alert and know what they are buying as mistakes can be costly. Report this Post to the Staff
