the-best-place-to-tradeI have filed a grevience about this seller with ebay and with paypal the seller offered an item (1 item) allowed 2 winners in a dutch auction and has received money from both buyers and has shipped the item to neither. Seller is in Queensland Australia - so it will not affect all of you but those who do not belong to the Aussie forum and heard about this seller ther should beware of this seller.

I suggest steering clear of seller johnpow34. He described his coin as Mint State when it was not, coin arrived postage due, and he responded to my reproach with disrespect. The story is here: https://goccf.com/t/6229

I would likewise avoid the seller billingerbrentbb. My only negative feedback left of 178. Would not honor shipping costs listed in auction. When I told him after his 3rd invoice that I would not complete the transaction, he reported me to ebay as a NPB. He quickly dropped his complaint. The story is here: https://goccf.com/t/5898

ebay is a great way to sell your coins. I have had a positive experience.

I know no one here would a) bid on a raw chain cent on ebay b) with no return privilege c) from a foreign country d) on a private auction e) from a seller with 29 feedback (ignore the negs--too recent) f) all from sellers g) without paypal/credit card protection. Primarily because by the time you stopped laughing, the auction would be over. But someone won the auction for $1375. Anyway, I figured the seller, matroxindol (which, by the way, also cures scabies), ought to be added to our no-go list. Of course, he'll never offer another auction under that ID again, but what the hey! (I love spell check!) Add reasons not to buy: this rare coin has never been authenticated (with so few in existence, any sensible buyer would want it authenticated first; and how did such a coin escape authentication after all these years?); ALL his auctions ended on the same day; it's suspicious that he suddenly has a bunch of 18th century coins available all at once (must have found a buried treasure trove in Canada, no doubt left over from the Revolutionary War ). Thanks for the heads-up, Mick. Here's the URL for the auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...150023494547I wonder if matroxindol is part of that counterfeiting ring headquartered in Toronto that I heard about in ancient coin circles? Maybe it's moved out of ancients and into old US coins. Yet one more auction to prove Darwin, Barnum, and Franklin were right. For some reason, I have very little sympathy for the sucker buyers. Fred

Add ebay seller tuesdaynightcoins and howardsdirect to the list of discouraged sellers as slabbers who sell their own overgraded coins. See forum discussion https://goccf.com/t/7513 . Fred

I have never bid on tuesdaynightcoins stuff but I have had them in my watchlist plenty of times. Thanks to this forum for the people who post this kind of information as it saves me and others not so versed yet plenty of heartache and money.

While I have not dealt with this ebay seller, I doubt that I will based upon my research on several of their auctions I have been watching this last week. The seller is Moderncoinmart. I have been watching PF70 UC ASE's from various years in order to get a feel for where the prices end up on them. What I have noticed is that most of the prices are pretty high when they end, and it just seems stange how the pattern is the same on every auction. And, the descriptions in their ads are very brief and don't say a whole lot, although I guess these coins kinds of speak for themselves. But most other sellers say alot more about such expensive and rare modern coins. And when looking at the acutal bidders, several come up over and over again. Now, they may be avid collectors, but this, along with the fact that most of the bidders have less than 100 feedbacks (and most are at or less than 50), it starts to show a trend. Any many of the bid amounts are in even amounts, like $75, $100, etc. I think it's the naturally skeptical nature I have developed with ebay over the years, but I wanted to know if anyone has dealt with this company and what they thought of their auctions.

As we have talked before about these sellers and some of their home grown slabbed coins in particular howardsdirect,I have always avoided these sellers. Then a couple weeks ago a PCGS Morgans came up on my constant search for a certian date Morgan. You guessed it,howardsdirect I let my need, want, obsession over take my own rule never to deal with or support in any way this seller, and I bought the coin. I have to give him credit. He shipped fast and the coin was excellent. I know I got lucky, but if your buying a slabbed PCGS,NGC,ANACS coin your usually pretty safe as long as the seller ships it and has no reputation of altering slabs in any way. I haven't added him to my favorite sellers list and it was probably a one time thing but just to say these sellers have to have some good sales or they wouldn't last a week selling on ebay. I was lucky but I also did my homework and checked the registration number on the coin with PCGS and went through his negative feedback to look for any slab altered coins before buying and I didn't buy a coin with a homegrown grading label. I have to say in all the coins I have bought off ebay,I have never yet had a bad experince. In part due to luck but mostly because I check feedback and stay away from questionable dealers.

Terry, I would also have no problem buying from one of these dealers if s/he had a good coin (e.g., solid TPG slab, problem free, decent price) that I wanted presuming the seller didn't have a history of shipping or financial transaction problems. It's sorta like cherry-picking their auctions. To coin (sri ) a phrase, even an Albatross has to stop flying eventually. Fred

I don't want to sound like a Devil's Advocate here, but some of this information must be taken with certain conditions in mind. Some of these self-slabbers are relatively honest businessmen who are practicing the age-old numismatic habit of overgrading their coins. These people did the same thing before there were slabs. The attitude of the unknowing buyer is exactly the same as it was before slabs - "this apparently experienced dealer says it's MS65, so it must be." Now, the same buyer says, "this coin is slabbed MS65, so it must be." The perception is the same, the attitudes on both sides of the sale are the same, the only change is the addition of plastic which is a wash since the plastic is the same on both sides. Before slabs, the dealers were the authorities on the grades. Now, the TPG's are the authority on the grades. The same atmosphere of honest mistakes and deliberate misgrading still exists. PCGS is just as likely to make a grading mistake as David Lawrence, because we're all human and nobody's perfect. There's nothing new under the sun. The solution is the same, also - buy the coin, not the slab. Acquire the knowledge before the purchase. So, if you see these names posted here and choose not to do business with them, remember that you are choosing not to do business as a personal, moral reaction to a practice which long predates slabbed coins. If you used to not do business with certain dealers because they overgraded raw coins, fine. If you've only started picking and choosing your vendors since the advent of TPG slabs, you're on a slippery slope. I will be frankly honest with you all. There is probably not a seller out there that I will not do business with. I know what I'm looking for, and I'm willing to assume the risk. There's no greater proportion of ripoff artists now than there was in 1975, and no greater proportion of suckers. There's just a perception of such because of the Internet's revolution of the selling process. I can't educate everyone. Some will not be educated, regardless of my efforts. In the meantime, as long as the system is in place, I have a collection to build, and I will build it.

Excellent post Dave. You have made some very good points, but Its not always what grade of coin your getting from ebay dealers but if you get the coin at all! and the trouble of trying to get your money back or return a coin if its not what you thought it would be. Ture,PCGS,ANACS and NGC can over or under grade a coin also, but you know you can usually recope your money if you want to resell it as long as you bought it within graysheet or even RedBook guidelines. That's usually not the case with basement grading services. I try to judge all coins on there own merits and the dealers on there feedback. I'm not saying you can't get a good deal from a questionable seller but if you continue to buy from a seller with a large percentage of negative feedback, its only a matter of time before you have a negative experience.
