Those are very interesting, considering how easy they would be to lose. Was there a need for such a small denomination?

No but they did use 1/4's --13.5mm, 1/2's----18mm and 1/3rd's of a farthing

Here is a third of a farthing 1876 ----15mm

I have lots of tiny ancients, but here is one of the smallest that I have next to a US cent for size reference:

Post-Your-Tiny-Coins!

Unknown Vandal or Gothic coin, ca. 450-600 AD, styled after "SALVS REIPVLICE" AE4 of Valentinian III. About 8mm in diameter and just under a gram.

I have several in the 5-7mm range, but those are mostly featureless little chunks of metal.
