I have been trying to figure out what this could be between the T and A of STATES on this 1863 Indian Head cent. If it were near the date I would assume that it was left over from a previously ground off date, but I can't imagine what this is from. Any ideas?

This is the result of what is called a "die chip". A minute part of the die breaks out leaving a depression in the die. That depression in the die shows up as a small raised spot on the finished coin.

Thanks,

Generally a die chip is attached to something and doesn't stand alone in the field. This looks to me like a small tooling hit on the die...essentially a die gouge.
