USSID - the swastika as a good luck symbol goes back to the turn of the 20th (guess that should be 19th) century. It achieved prominence as such with the popularity of picture post cards. It wasn't until a couple decades later its intended use was  ized by the Nazi Socialists of Germany. The Nazi swastika always consists of shapes more like the letter "s" I've seen the good luck version with the "s" shape normal and flopped. edit: and yes, Chicago. Edited by 999fine

My oldest Exposition medal and from the second country I've collected outside of the United States. The 1862 International Exhibition, or Great London Exposition was held in South Kensington, London, on a site now occupied by the Natural History Museum. The buildings occupied 21 acres attracting about 6.1 million visitors. Above the brick entrances of the "Industrial Buildings" on the east and west fronts were two great glass domes, each 150 feet wide and 260 feet high - at that time the largest domes ever built.  The exhibition was a showcase of the advances made in the industrial revolution , especially in the decade since the first Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. Among the items on display were; the electric telegraph, submarine cables, the first plastic, Parkesine , machine tools, looms and precision instruments.  The manufacture of ice by an early refrigerator caused a sensation. The London and North Western Railway exhibited one of their express passenger locomotives, No. 531 Lady of the Lake which won a bronze medal at the exhibition and was so popular that the entire class of locomotive became known as Ladies of the Lake.  A brand new shining penny in 1862 would buy you a guide booklet. A rare piece of ephemera, which I would like to own but that new penny today would be probably worth much more than the booklet. I'll be on the lookout for either.

THE GREAT NORTHERN EXHIBITION, PITTSBURGH, 1883 An ebay pickup from last week, here's the seller's (drilos) description as I couldn't not find any info online about this exhibition: This token (medalet or fob) is a souvenir of the 1883 Great Northern Exposition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - an event not held because the exposition building burned prior to the opening. Token authority Russell Rulau catalogued this item as token Pa-Pt 7. The obverse has an image of the exposition building, with the manufacturer's mark on the truncation (Hoefle, Cincinnati). The reverse has the name of the event - THE GREAT NORTHERN EXPOSITION - 1883. It is holed for use as a fob - and most likely originally was suspended on a ribbon. The diameter is approximately 20 mm (3/4"), the composition is brass, and the edge is reeded (vertically milled). I'm delighted to have found and acquired it  (Images from seller's listing as my cell phone camera couldn't come close to this quality)   Edited by 999fine

And, while I am still up, a more recent World's Fair item, THE 1982 WORLD'S FAIR Collectors Set from the Knoxville Fair. Folder contains 4 medals set in a die-cut board which is glued into a 3-panel folder with descriptive text of the 4 medals - The United States Pavillion, the Sunsphere, The Tennessee Pavillion and Energy Turns the World. Medals are just under 1.5" diameter, struck in bronze. At $9.99 with free shipping its purchase wasn't a head scratcher.      |

999, You know, when I get medals in cards like that, I personally carefully remove them, carefully put them in 2x2's and save the card with the set that way. Too often the cardboard will attract moisture or react with nice looking medals like that.

TNG - oh, I agree, already did that, but I put inexpensive non-silver in flips with descriptive cards, and keep the packaging.  |

I haven't been here in a week or so. Awesome additions everyone. I picked this up for a bit over melt. It is Sterling. I tried to do some research, but could not find any info on the subject matter: the 94th infantry division ASSOCIATION. This medal is honoring the associations 25th anniversary. Any info appreciated.   Edited to add: do you guys recommend an acetone soak? Edited by thisistheshow
