Nice additions!

I haven't posted here in a while so I thought I would put up one of the four quite recent additions to my Nürnberg-Fürther Strassenbahn 20 pfennig set. I haven't counted, but I think I'm closing in on all of the designs.

Wenzel Jamnitzer




Wenzel Jamnitzer (1507-1585) was the best known German goldsmith of his era and served a succession of Holy Roman Emperors as court goldsmith. He was also known as an artist and print maker through the craft of etching.



An example of his work - a silver box for writing utensils:



Jamnitzer performed scientific studies to improve the technical knowledge of his guild. In 1568 he published Perspectiva Corporum Regularium (Perspective of Regular Solids), a book remembered for its engravings of polyhedra. This book was based on Plato's Timaeus and Euclid's Elements, and it contained 120 forms based on the Platonic solids. An example:



The above plate is quite remarkable because the form on the left is almost exactly that of the rhombic triacontahedron, and the core of the shape on the right is almost exactly the great stellated dodecahedron. Both of these were first presented mathematically by Kepler, fifty years later, in 1619. Links concerning this work:

One last interesting tidbit:

In 1543 he was appointed as a coin and seal die-cutter by the city of Nuremberg. In 1552, he became master of the city mint.

I was stationed in Nurnberg for a while. Rode the strassenbahn frequently. Don't know if any tokens made it home with me.

Quoting myself, I did count tonight and I have 29 plus one on the way of the 45 designs, so 67% completed.




If any did, I don't think they would be these. They are nearly 100 years old.

Recent addition, MIDLAND EMPIRE STATE FAIR & RODEO, Billings Montana, featuring a favorite western Americawriter, Will James. Born in Quebec Canada in 1892, he moved to the Montana area and wrote some classic titles including Sand and Smokey the Cow Horse. Also know for his artwork.

Minted in 1968 in nickel-silver by the Franklin mint, once available in both a red and a blue holder, seen by me only online, don't know the difference. Text on either card states 250 minted.

That's really nice, and a very limited edition. If I knew much about will James, I had forgotten it.

I love it when someone's medal or token or exonumia leads me down the path of Google to learn something new.
