1904 US Express Co. Security Dispatch
HK-736 Brass Medal U.S. EXPRESS CO., 50th ANNIVERSARY 1904. These medals were struck at the U.S. Mint. According to Julian, 100 were struck in silver, and an additional 20,891 were struck in brass and bronze combined. This one is Bright Brass. 34 mm in diameter. A little black harmless goop which I think will easily lift off with some acetone soaking, and I'll update the images when I do that. The United States Express Company, which operated from 1854 to 1914, was a privately owned company that forwarded parcels and freight. The company served the northern states from New England west to Colorado. The express business-transportation of parcels and valuables-was begun in America by William F. Harnden, an employee of Boston & Worcester R.R., who, in 1839, established a "package express" between Boston and New York. After a slow start, the idea caught on and during the following two decades dozens of express company operations were launched along various railroad and steamboat routes, many of which were eventually absorbed by larger outfits like Adams and American.

1832 US Phila Mint - Lords Prayer Gilt Brass MedalFound this in my jewelry box this morning.  The 12.81mm holed token is listed in "The Standard Catalog of United States Tokens, 1700-1900" by Russell Rulau. This token is listed by Rulau in the section of Pennsylvania Trade tokens. The token was produced by George B. Soley on the Mint's first steam coinage press, which he had acquired as scrap in 1875. Relatively common, extant pieces are available in high grade. It is listed as: PA-Ph 394. Sold at various late 19th century expositions and at the Philadelphia Mint as souvenirs. Can you imagine buying the Mint's first steam coinage press for the price it is worth in scrap?

A recent addition, a US Trade Token from DeLOACH MILL MANUFACTURING CO, VARIABLE FRICTION FEED SAW  Undated, ca. 1903-1905. Minted by Whitehead & Hoague, listed in the Token Catalog as #52385. The company founder William Henderson Deloch was a Confederate Cavalry Cfficer. Edited by 999fine

1800's King Louis XVI of France - Fountain Brass Jeton I am to believe this US quarter size "jeton" was minted in Germany. I suspect sometime in the earlier 1800's. Louis XVI was the last king of France (1774-92) in the line of Bourbon monarchs preceding the French Revolution of 1789. He was executed for treason by guillotine in 1793. Marie Antoinette, wife of King Louis XVI was executed at the guillotine on October 16, 1793 nine months after her husband.  I do think the motto OMNIBVS NON SIBI translates in Latin roughly to NOT FOR HIMSELF BUT FOR ALL.

1874 Showing lots of wear = character From what I found, or didn't find, online and on ebay, this appears to be an uncommon medal. A similar with Elgin Watch text exists. |

999 your doing fine! I have a lesser known Exposition medal here too. 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition
Atlanta Georgia HK-268 Designed and struck at U.S. Mint, Philadelphia. On the obverse, rays of fire under a bale of cotton representing desolation of crops resultant from Sherman's march to sea. Phoenix is rising from flames which is symbolic of the resurrection of industry. Henry W. Grady is on the reverse, who was the editor of The Atlanta Constitution. His writings and speeches helped reunite people of North and South after Civil War. This is HK-268 So-called dollar in Hibler and Kappen catalog. You guys know I am a collector of Buffalo Bill medals and he was there, he is shown on this poster.  |

 Apparently given to all who participated in the contest, runners up (details unknown to me) sponsored by IPANA TOOTHPASTE. (Does any one remember the early 1960s TV commercials featuring Bucky Beaver singing, "Brusha, brusha, brusha with the new Ipana..."Looks to be a more elusive medal judging from a quick look at ebay history as well as online searches. My example shows what looks like light wear and chatter in the background fields as well as strong die polishing marks. (The winner won a trip to the fair.) Edited by 999fine
