Certainly Indian States style, 1800's or earlier. It's got a "Year 39" on one side, and a trident on the other. I'm thinking Gwalior, but can't find a match for the "year" and mintmark.

Thanks Sap! I'll try to find out if it's a Gwalior coin. But wasn't Gwalior a Hindu state? Why would they have coins with Arabic numerals on them? And could the mark that is slightly off the flan to the left of 3 be part of a numeral?

Ah yes. I looked up some sites and the obverse is almost an exact match of a Gwalior coin from 1865 on numismaster.com (I can't seem to link to the page, it only takes you to the homepage).

I was hoping this was a considerably older coin :(

Try Maratha Confederacy, KM240 Rupee, Shah Alam II 1759-1806. Not a perfect match, but very close and the date is right.

Good call, DCH. I never thought to look there. Based on the shape of the trident mintmark, I think KM# 249 is a closer match than #240. But either way, that's this one solved.
