  Common date Shield nickel with less common tall/narrow date numbers, touching the shield ball. You can also see a significant die crack in the upper right obverse. Looks like a slam dunk XF to me. Opinions? --Kevin

Yes, it's a nice coin! I can live with EF.  ! If you can, take pictures of your coins outside the flips/holders. |

Maybe the date is OK but the shield fell.  Nice coin though. |

krhudson1, Nice nickel! Looks XF to me. Here's a lower-grade 1869 narrow-date nickel, with a similar die crack near the top of the obverse. It doesn't appear to be an earlier die state of yours, though. Mine also has a second die crack protruding from the right side of the ball above the date.  |

Thanks for sharing another example, Mr. Classic! How did you photograph that coin? I am having a heck of a time trying to get detailed, in-focus shots. Thanks in advance.

Hi Kevin, You're welcome. I used a Canon T3i DSLR camera on a tripod with a remote shutter release to keep the camera stable. My lighting was indirect sunlight only. I need to get an artificial light setup, but I've been getting by on sunlight so far. I've got a good collection of Shield nickel varieties. It's a great series for cherrypicking because there are so many die cracks, broken letters, missing leafs, re-punched dates, etc. that sellers don't always spot. I don't want to hijack your thread, so let me know if you want to see more varieties, and please show more of your Shield nickels if you have more. There is a Yahoo group for Shield nickels also. |

Thanks guys. And thanks for the tips, Classic. My problem is obvious -- I live in Washington state, where sunlight is as rare as a $10,000 bill. The nickel I posted is my only shield, but I'd love to see some of your more unusual examples!

The main issue is that it's not in my collection. Looks like a lot of die damage, which was common with the rays die. That's a nice example of the early nickel! |
