No hot dog champ here. Good news today, work is very slow, but the management are keeping everyone of us for the next time it ramps up. The owner has never had a layoff in the company's 28 years. He's proud of that, and should be. I'm liking taking a job there. Here's my drill. 60 foot long.

Drill the holes for lots of folks. I-beams for construction, HSS for heavy equipment, elevator plates, on and on. It's not like being a machinist anymore. It's a great job to retire from. The machine does it all buddy. Got a laser that picks up the datum. The clamp is automatic. (no more pulling wrenches.) Programing is a breeze. No more mic's or shadowgraphs, pullout tape, and I have a +/- 1/16" tolerance. Super smart machine. Runs right into the material, detects it instantly and starts drilling. Then knows exactly when it breaks through. On to the next hole, repeat. All I do is pull the part to the stops, you'll know what I mean, and away we go. Shuffle a lot of HSS over 300 lbs without rollers, just sliding. Like we say...."free gym membership working here". It's true, I feel fit as a fiddle.

HSS is hollow structural sections, just a fancy way to say square tube. I went ....WHAT! ... the 1st time I heard it called this. HSS is high speed steel to a machinist.
