Hello. I have been away from posting for a while as I have been too busy trying to sort and examine a very large amount of BU rolls and circulated goodies that I acquired at auction. I am again going to start to try to share some of my findings. Lets start with the 1965 nickle. I was just reading the post about a possible new variety "5" in the 1965 nickles. I have been going through my rolls and I have a found some interesting things. Does anyone know about a clipped planchet during the production run for the 1965 nickle? I have a few rolls that are offset and I have one with a small clip in the side that I believe could have been the cause of all these offsets. Here are examples of the offsets I am finding. I also have some offsets that have a weak strike on the 5. I have offsets with the extra claw and grease marks and some just offset with and without the offset. Most have have proof like frosted cameos and these are the ones with offsets. I also notice some have worn dies on the beaver for-causing them to look quite bald on the hind quarters and the head. I do have some chrome looking cameo ones and these have the best strike with no missing fur and no offsets..I guess those are the circulated finish? Any comments are welcome!! ?

Not sure if your familiar with these claw varieties but your last picture has one. Found mainly in PL strikes.

On Coins and Canada there is a clipped planchet for the 1965 here http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...989#erreur-1Also if you are looking for the other "5" variety (witch I have well documented in my post about it) keep in mind it must have the gap shown in this photo. If you do come across one with a similar gap I would love to see photos of it for my documents, I have only found 1 other that is the same and unfortunately the owner of the other one cant be tracked down to confirm they are the same so I am only going by photos of the other I have came across online. Things to look for... - Doubling on the 5 (noticeable notch) - Noticeable gap difference on roof of the 5 like in the photos - Doubling on the Stems of the leaves - Overall the 5 is "Thinner" than others.

First I am not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but the clips and offset are always cool to see, the minor varieties even if accepted has very little following, that is why dealers have pages of these for a buck or two. Normally they rarely sells, so if you focus on collecting minor varieties, you will be stuck with them.

I agree with john100, although they are good conversational pieces minor varieties are mostly kept by collectors because they like it. I don't see the different "5" variety catching a premium anytime soon or ever to be honest, I also have a few with the extra claw that I doubt will ever catch a premium. My research regarding the 5 is mostly for educational/learning purposes and aren't directed as a "everyone hurry and check your nickels, it might be worth a lot" scenario. It is mainly for my own research and to show others of my findings, so with that said, it's 2x2 worthy in my books but nothing more than that.
Fact of the matter is even if it was a widely known variety it is very small and a good rule of thumb I like to go by when searching for errors/varieties is if you cant see it with the naked eye (no loop, no camera or microscope), it probably wont catch a premium.

I am buying a BU roll of offset and extra claw nickles for $5 a roll. I don't mind having discussions about them and their varieties as it interests me more then any profits do :) Research is fun for me and it averages out to approx 13 cents a nickle. So I am pretty flexible if I want to offload a few. :)

Yes, I covered the majority of that in my original post along with confirming it is also a DDR (doubled die reverse) due to the doubling on the 5, the leaf stems and in lettering of "5 Cents". Some have said that the size of the 5 being smaller could be due to the die being fresh/newer, witch is totally possible but if that were the case you would be finding more of them, witch I have not. So I am interested to see what you find for my own research, I don't plan on getting rid of the original anytime soon until I find a couple more to compare it with. What throws me off for a loop is that the 5 is doubled, witch means its technically even smaller than what my research suggests because two 5's on top of each other would make the doubling larger, yet this doubled 5 is still smaller than an original in mint state. Again, as I cant stress it enough for others reading, this information is for educational purposes, IF someone does happen to find one though I would really like to see photos of it to finish my research. So if you have the time tone2tone and you come across one I would be interested in taking a look at your photos.

Yes..sorry..I didn't retain a lot of info from the original post as I was just going on the photos. :) So..if you go back and look at the photo I have of the offset extra claw varieties Both examples are different..these are both offset coins and have the extra claw die chip, so they had to been minted at the same time as I don't think they let it continue to press offset nickles for long.. My interest is piqued!! Stay tuned..

And what about these "squashed 9's" as I like to call them? :)
