So I found this penny today and at first I thought it was a 1967. Is this common for dates around this year? I have a picture of a normal 1963 d for comparison of the date.
Good find or another example of what not to look for?

What you're seeing is damage from a gum ball-candy machine.

The way to tell? Note the affected area is parallel to the rim area.
