1919 was a horiible year globally like 2020 is now. It was the first full year after the end of World War 1 and the world was reeling from an Influenza epidemic that made this one look like a hayfever cough (Some 30 million people died). Plus in 1919 - the fear and paranoia over communism ran throughout the Western world, the war had destroyed many empires and European Monarchies and reduced many states to poverty. Fine silver coinages gave way to brass and nickel coins with a promise in a few years. Inflation racked many European countries and the fine Silver coinages of Latin America started a long process of debasing and inflation. However in the UK, it was the last year of a fine Sterling silver coinage of 92.5% silver of which this sparkling halfcrown was an example.   This gleamer is again near EF and one of my highlights and I have owned it for 6 months. I would have shown a 1920 halfcrown but the mail did not arrive today  |

Some of my other 1919 pieces are nowhere near as nice like this Australian Threepence.   This would be aGood and typical of Australian silver, which was unaffected in 1920 remaining Sterling until 1945! The coinage survived poorly in the hot and humid or the hot and dry climate. Australian coins in conditions above fine for Geo V anad Edward VII is steadily more expensive. |

Since sterling silver is .925 (37/40) fine, here are the approximate silver and copper concentrations of pre-1920 British coins.
Threepence - 1.4138 g (1.3078g Ag, 0.1060g Cu)
Sixpence - 2.8276g (2.6155g Ag, 0.2121g Cu)
Shilling - 5.6552g (5.2311g Ag, 0.4241g Cu)
Florin - 11.3104g (10.4621g Ag, 0.8483g Cu)
Half crown - 14.1380g (13.0777g Ag, 1.0603g Cu)
Crown - 28.2760g (26.1553g Ag, 2.1207g Cu)
The .500 coins issued between 1920 and 1946 have the following concentrations of silver and copper:
Threepence - 1.4138 g (0.7069g Ag, 0.7069g Cu)
Sixpence - 2.8276g (1.4138g Ag, 1.4138g Cu)
Shilling - 5.6552g (2.8276g Ag, 2.8276g Cu)
Florin - 11.3104g (5.6552g Ag, 5.6552g Cu)
Half crown - 14.1380g (7.0690g Ag, 7.0690g Cu)

Impressive 1919 coins there NumisRob, the KN penny is great. Here is a standard London pair.   My pennies get less presentable as we head back into the 1910s. The halfpenny is pretty nice for a 1910s halfpenny, which are mostly found heavily worn. Some copper coins circulated for well over a century with bun head pennies of Victoria from 1860 still being used in 1970! A 1919 coin could suffer 50 years of wear - this one was probably removed after just 10 or so. There is a good chance I have so many F/VF pennies and halfpence of this era as it may be they circulated here in New Zealand and were removed from circulation in 1940. Edited by Princetane

One of my more exotic coins here. This is a holed 10 centimes of the Belgian Congo and this one is in Dutch, on Independence in 1960, the language was exclusively French with Dutch being rejected, mainly as Congo was surrounded by French speaking republiques as well as Portuguese (Angola) and English ones (Zambia).   A pentagonal form of 5 A's for Le Roi Albert and on the other side is the star you see on the Congo Free State flag. One of my most interesting pieces I think. |
