A lot of quarters there! Here is an Egyptian version of a Halfcrown - I have shown this coin in a few threads before, but its one of my favourites and at $8 a real steal.   10 Piastres - between the size of a Florin and Halfcrown - a WW1 era guide given to British and NZ soldiers stationed in Giza for training showed the coins and their values, stating a 10 Piastre coin was around 2 shillings and thruppence and a good coin not to lose (Some naive soldiers got confused with silver 2 piastres and cupronickel 2 qirsh (millemes). This one is well worn, but an honest coin. The wear suggests it was probably used after WW1 and possibly into the 30s and even WW2 when later coins were used, but earlier ones still legal tender. |

My 1917 Halfcrown is a decent Fine to gFine example and does not compare to the beautiful one shown earlier by Pepactonius. My 1915/16 coins however are real gleamers though.   The years 1914 to 1919 saw very generous numbers of Half crowns issued - it seemed war would not affect silver coin output as even the Germans and Russians along with our French allies issued many silver coins through to 1917 at least. The 6 years saw over 10 million half crowns per year issued (Those are huge numbers) and were a contrast to the combined 8.7 million coins issued in 1911/13. 1917 saw some 11 million coins which was like 1919 - however 32.5 million in 1915 and 29 million each in 1916 and 1918 saw a glut of silver on the market. Even then no one knew that the war may precipitate the end of this sterling silver coinage. Paralyse, your Aussie Florin is about average for that era, you will see coins in conditions above VG (Yours is aGood to Good) go at high prices that increase exponentially. It's only KGVI that prices become reasonable. Pepactonius and Dorado, I love all your coins - the gold, silver and bronze, love that Peruvian gold, the Newfoundland 50 cents and all the stunning US coins! A holed 1917 Canadian quarter to go with Princeatne's dime:  1917 Philadelphia and San Francisco dimes:   French 25 centimes - this coin changed from pure nickel to cupro-nickel in 1917. The 1917 nickel ones are rare. They can be identified because the 'MES' is underlined. This is a common cu-ni specimen:  |
