Except for a few 1898 test strikes, 1899 was the first year for the well known 20 francs Marianne gold coin. It continued to be struck until 1914 (some of the 1914 coins are actually struck 1921, and 1951-60 there was a massive restrike of these coins, all dated 1907-14, directed to collectors and gold hoarders). A total of nearly 155 million coins were issued (including the restrikes), which is the largest number among all French gold coins. Report this Post to the Staff

The obverse has pretty rainbow colors, but the reverse is mostly dark browns and greys. Detail is high VF-low EF range. Princetane Pillar of the Community 4628 Posts	Posted 05/21/2020 10:21 pm My last 1899 coin - a fairly nasty Belgian Half franc In Flemish, must be very early as the Belgians did not really cater for Flemish until the later 1800s - expecting everyone to speak Royal French and then perhaps English and German (King Leopolds I and II apparently spoke perfect English) You can rely on me for realcoins to be interspersed between the proof gold and Morgans - every coin is an authentic piece used by members of the 19th century working class from now on.
