1898 what a year - the Siege of Khartoum, the battleship Maine, the Kaiser visits the Holyland and Madonna has her first hit single with "Like a Gibson Girl"    The humour is the best thing I can offer for that year - this pair of British copper coins in Fine is the best I can do, we have a stained German 10 Pfennig and a holed farthing as well. |

Not mucking around - without the stains, this would be a pretty nice German empire 10 pfennig (It was between this and a worn demi Franc with the numbers 98 visible  )   If I could get that gunk off, as there's a nice coin under it. |

Let's hop across the pond and here's an 1898 Half Crown and an 1898 Florin, both Victoria. The Florin is in pretty good shape, EF45 or so (US grading) with some luster left. Paralyse - nice coins, your American grading systems are so liberal, we would gVF in the UK/NZ, The star of India is quite flat but compared to my 1890s British coins, that thing would win a medal. I love the fact you are showing very worn coins too as well as the show ponies other people favour. I didn't show a 1898 halfcrown as I was going to buy one, but the dealer was not happy with the one he wanted to sell me and then it turned out he had sold it ages ago! Here is my holey Farthing and thats my 98!   This coin is like the German one - high VF and yet with some form of disfigurement to make it a scrap piece. I mean who would pierce a farthing, I can understand wearing gold and silver around your neck, but a farthing? |

Perhaps it was part of a coin bracelet!!
The Florin is a bit of a weak obverse strike, it looks a bit better in hand, but still definitely has wear enough to knock it down from an American AU grade into an EF grade.
It's just a different grading system -- British EF is much closer to an American AU53-55, and British aUnc is closer to American AU58 or MS62.
Also, from what I've seen, British grading heavily punishes distractions (marks, scratches, luster breaks) or issues with the coin, when it comes to the net overall grade. This makes it even more difficult to compare.
The same grading "schism" exists in America, where some grading systems, such as the one used by EAC, are much stricter in many cases than the grades assigned by the "slab" companies (TPG's.)
